I’ve been having mixed feelings about all of the AI-generated art lately. On the one hand, it’s been fascinating to see some of the completely random pairings that people have been able to drum up in their heads and have them instantly converted to high-quality artwork. (See some of the creations in this Facebook group). It’s absolutely fascinating to me. Ultimately though, it’s a fun toy to use to come up with some fun ideas to show your friends. The downside…a lot of the computer learning has been trained on actual artists’ work, essentially stealing artists’ styles and possibly eventually putting actual human artists out of work. The optimist in me hopes there will always be enough quality humans out there who prefer to support real artists and not the computers, but I guess that remains to be seen.
All that being said, these images that Johnny Darrell generated using Midjourney, that imagine if Holy Mountain/El Topo director Alejandro Jodorowsky directed “Tron” are spreading like wildfire. While there’s no way, Jodorowsky, at the ripe young age of 93, will direct his own interpretation of the 80s classic any time soon, it’s still fun to see what it could possibly look like if he did.
