Yorgos Lanthimos is showing no signs of slowing down. Fresh off last year’s Kinds of Kindness, he’s already gearing up for his next theatrical release, titled Bugonia. This one will serve as yet another collaboration with his apparent muse Emma Stone (their 5th film collaboration so far), and versatile favorite Jesse Plemons. Also featured in the film are Alicia Silverstone and comedian Stavros Halkias.
Bugonia is an English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan‘s cult-favorite 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, a crazy sci-fi thriller that blends conspiracy theories, kidnapping, and corporate paranoia. The screenplay, was written by Will Tracy (The Menu, Succession).
The basic premise of the film is this: two conspiracy-obsessed young men abduct the CEO of a major pharmaceutical corporation, convinced she’s secretly an alien plotting humanity’s downfall. Obviously, there will be more to it, but man…I’m excited to see how the Lanthimos brand of surrealist dark humor blends with bizarre sci-fi elements.
On the musical side, experimental composer Jerskin Fendrix returns to score the film, having already nailed the eerie, off-kilter vibes for both Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. Additionally, Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary) is onboard as a producer, amplifying expectations for some seriously unsettling brilliance.
It’s safe to say Lanthimos is fully committed to keeping audiences both entertained and thoroughly weirded out. As with everything else he does, I’m here for it.
